Is Your Fussy Baby Making You Want to Scream?
We know you love your baby. And we know you are a good parent. But sometimes, your baby’s fussiness is enough to make you want to tear your hair out.
It’s a fact, babies can be crabby…for a multitude of reasons. Maybe they are teething. Or maybe they have baby colic or painful gas. Whatever the reason, there is a solution out there that can help calm the fussiest infant in a matter or minutes. And that is by using white noise. Especially white noise from either a vaccuum cleaner, or a hair dryer. Don’t believe us?
Check out the video below.
What is White Noise?
You might be wondering, “What is white noise anyway?”
Actually, you might be surprised to find out loads of stuff crank out white noise.
Perhaps you have had become drowsy when traveling in a car? Well, the tires on the road are producing white noise in this scenario. Who hasn’t put their baby in a car and driven her around to help ease her fussy behavior or to get her to go to sleep?
Or what about when listening to the hum of a fan? Lots of people sleep with a fan on not particularly to stay cool, but for the soothing sound.
So, to be technical, white noise is any type of monotonous, rhythmic sound. Scientists indicate white noise, or white sound is comprised of all the frequencies a human ear can discern. It is soothing to listen to. It relaxes as well as helps to mask out any other noise that might be distracting. That’s why it is great for fussy babies!
White Noise for Babies?
Yes, white noise is GREAT for fussbusting. Let’s do an experiment.
Place your palms over your ears. Don’t you notice a little something? That something is the sound of blood moving through the ears. Your baby encountered a sound like this while in the womb. Your baby innately remembers this womb noise after being born. She correlates womb noise with a safe, secure, happy place.
Playing a vacuum sound as white noise for just a few minutes can instantly soothe an incredibly cranky baby (remember the video above). Scientists believe the tone of a vacuum cleaner is very close to the tone your baby heard while in the womb. Hence the reason for instant calm.
Playing a vacuum sound can also help your baby stay asleep once they are asleep. A white noise mp3 will mask out other sounds that may startle and agitate your baby. Like a barking dog, a ringing phone, or rowdy siblings.
What do doctors think about white noise?
Pediatric professionals, including those at the Mayo Clinic, advise that making use of “white noise – such as a recording of ocean waves or the m
onotonous sound of an electric fan or vacuum cleaner” improve your baby’s ability to relax. (source: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-baby/PR00037).
The majority of parents will play white noise on a continuous loop while baby sleeps in order to keep them asleep. As your baby becomes accustomed to a sleep schedule, you can fade out using white noise for baby sleep. However, adults sometimes continue to use white noise to relax, sleep and concentrate better.

Rated 5 Stars by Little Diva on iTunes!
I am a mother of a 14 week old baby and we use this every day. Our baby is a fussy baby, a little diva! I do not know why the sound of a vacuum does such miracles but it does. It puts her right to sleep. One of our challenges has been getting her to sleep thru the night. She wakes up at 2 am for a feeding and her sleep afterwards is very sporadic. We use the vacuum white noise and she gets another 3 hours of sleep.
